Mission Statement
Sharpscore is a tool designed by knife enthusiasts
We wanted a better way to compare our knives - it didn’t exist
So we made it
For thousands of years people have been sharpening tools and using them to cut things. It wasn't until 2012 that anyone tried to put numbers to knife sharpness with an industry standard scale.
The commercial system uses standardized monofilament line of approximately 6 pound test to measure the force on a digital scale to complete a push cut.

The commercial scale and their associated tester fixtures were a good first step to empirically measuring knifesharpness. For the first time you could put a somewhat repeatable number to how sharp your knife was. This approach has two primary flaws. The test is measuring only a single point on the blade. The tester documentation will tell you to measure several points and average them, but they are still only point tests.
The second primary flaw is this is measuring a push cut, when most knives are used for draw cuts. Not only does the available commercial system not measure the majority of your edge, it doesn't measure it the way you cut with your knife. Furthermore, existing testers from the primary supplier are little more than dramatically overpriced rebranded kitchen scales.
Offering no functionality other than an ordinary $10 commonplace kitchen appliance. Users are forced to document their tests by manually writing down results, or to prove a test - taking a picture with a camera.
At Sharpscore we wanted something better . .

Instead of figuring out how to use a kitchen scale to measure
knife cuts - we designed and built a scale from the ground up
specifically for analyzing HOW your knife cuts.
Sharpscore uses a high speed sensor to gather hundreds of data points during draw cuts on whatever media you want to put into the fixture. One of the most common methods of demonstrating knife keenness is to slice paper, and now for the first time in history you can
measure the force needed to cut paper or paper like material. We
didn't want you locked into proprietary media, so we designed the
fixture to accommodate any type of media you want to use.
This way you can perform comparative analysis during sharpening
using cheap paper from a magazine if you want, while still being
able to use official Sharpscore media for official online
comparisons. We give you the best of both worlds.
The Sharpscore knife tester is built around it's companion app for Android and iOS. The app allows you to control and calibrate the test fixture, as well as index and record all of your test results. Test results can be stored locally, and if users want to opt it - they can also create an online account to store their results online.
When stored online users can post their test results to the global leaderboard to compare how their sharpening skills stack up against other people around the world.
We've also integrated one click PDF output from the app so sharpening professionals can document the effectiveness of their skills to their
clients.

At Sharpscore we wanted something better than a $10 kitchen scale - we wanted a real tool designed to test knife sharpness engineered and designed with modern hardware and software features. It didn't exist, so we made it.
We are past the prototype stage and are officially in beta testing. We are coming to Kickstarter so we can raise money for mass production. We know our hardware and software work, because we have been building and testing them by hand.
We need to raise money for injection mold tooling and custom PCBa production. We are a dedicated team of engineers that come from the electronics manufacturing world. We know what we are doing, and we've proven what we want to do works. Now it's time to raise the money to bring Sharpscore from prototype to consumer product. Join us today....
